1. GRADING - Updated list of assignments plus scores handed out and discussed in class.

2. Google Apps
a. Google Docs - upload a document on Google Docs, and embed on your Google site.
b. Google Calendar - create a calendar, add an event, and embed on your Google site.

Here's an example of a live, active Google site, being used by an FSU professor:

https://sites.google.com/site/beluthahatchie/

Now think: Why does it make sense to use Google Sites for this purpose?
How practical is it to use Google Sites?

And the big question: Can you do something like this? (The answer should be YES!)

3. Course Evaluation

NEXT WEEK: Check your final grades on Blackboard on Monday night. Come to class on Tuesday for any make-up work, if any.

April 3 - Finishing up Excel Data Analysis

Welcome Back!

March 25, 2012

Spreadsheet application programs and Microsoft Excel

a. It's about DATA. Data collection and data analysis. What does this mean?

b. Share your Excel tips and tricks: When do you use Excel? What do you know how to do in Excel? (e.g. I know how to put a formula, add a chart, etc.)

Problem Set 1

Select one of the following. Organize the data and represent with a chart. You may confer with a classmate, but you must create your own chart. Be ready to copy and paste your table and chart on to your own wiki page.

  • Chuck currently weighs 189 lbs. Calculating BMI for his height of 5'10", reaching 173 will get him within the range of a normal weight. Considering that healthy weight loss should not be more than 8 lbs a month, create a weight tracking chart that will show Chuck's progress toward his goal of 173 lbs. The chart should have a place for Chuck to log his weight each week.
  • The Girl Scouts are working on a project. They want to create a club house. The school has already set aside one room they can use and a local designer volunteered for free to design a nice club house for the girls. They will need $300 to pull off this project, on top of what they will get out of cookie sales. The girls go on different fund raising activities. In January, they earned $45 on a bake sale. In February, they earned $65 during a car wash week-end. A spring garage sale from donated items brought them $110 in March. Organize this data and represent it in a chart that will show the girls project towards their goal.

Problem Set 2

The class will be given a quiz. Use pseudonyms, but do your best! We will then check the answers, gather and analyze data. Then each will provide a paragraph outlining a plan for instruction based on the data.

1. Using Videos in Instruction

Videos are great teaching tools for presenting information and demonstrating procedures. Videos are engaging and easier to comprehend than written text. It's often better to "show" than "tell", right?

You will one video project in this class: An instructional video, where you either present information or demonstrate a procedure (how-to).

We have Flip cameras, iPads and iPods with which you can capture video. For editing the video, you will be using iMovie.

2. Getting to Know iMovie

Introduction to iMovie 11

More iMovie Tutorials

If you have a Google Account, use the same username and password to get started with YouTube.
Create you "channel." Follow the prompts.

4. Getting Started with your Instructional Video

1. Integrating the Internet: Online Games

Online games can be used for drill and practice, to develop vocabulary or fluency in a subject area.

You may also use games as homework or individual practice.

Find good online games and provide links through a resource web site for students.

Assignment: Locate at least one online game for each subject area at the grade level you are teaching. Add links to these games on your portaportal.

2. Getting Started with Multimedia

Multimedia is media and content that uses a combination of different content forms. The term can be used as a noun (a medium with multiple content forms) or as an adjective describing a medium as having multiple content forms. The term is used in contrast to media which use only rudimentary computer display such as text-only, or traditional forms of printed or hand-produced material. Multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, or interactivity content forms. (Wikipedia)

Why use multimedia?
1. Multimedia supports comprehension.
2. Multimedia increases retention.

Online games often include multimedia - graphics, sound, text.

Videos are multimedia.

Your next assignment will be an instructional video and we will edit it using iMovie.

Aside from iMovie, there are web 2.0 tools for creating multimedia projects. Here are two for you to explore today.
